Shillong: The All Khasi Hills Achik Joint Action Committee held a public meeting Saturday in Puksora village. They gathered to address recruitment hurdles facing Garo youths in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills. The District Selection Committees currently mandate a Khasi qualifying paper for this region. This creates a disadvantage for Garo residents. The Garo population in this area now tops 4 lakhs.
AKHAJAC leader John D. Sangma slammed the January 2026 government memorandum. He wants the rules changed to include both official state languages in every test. "When both Khasi and Garo languages are now official languages of Meghalaya, why should both languages not be included in all DSCs in the state?" Sangma asked.
The organization is taking the fight to the streets. They previously gathered at Malangkona village in West Khasi Hills to rally support. Sangma warned the MDA government that his committee will keep meeting in Garo-populated villages across the region. He intends to escalate the protest if officials refuse to budge on this policy. The group maintains that their youths deserve local employment opportunities after graduation.
