Itanagar: Crews are pushing ahead with the India-Myanmar border fence at Pangsau Pass in Changlang district. Armed personnel guard the workers and equipment around the clock. The work continues even after a militant ambush recently claimed the lives of Assam Rifles soldiers.
The Border Roads Organisation manages the site, keeping construction teams a safe distance from the specific ambush point. This project began in November 2025. It targets the 1,643-km border to stop insurgency and illegal trafficking. The federal government set aside Rs 31,000 crore for the massive effort.
Four states share this boundary. Arunachal Pradesh claims 520 km, Mizoram holds 510 km, Manipur spans 398 km, and Nagaland covers 215 km. Officials view the barrier as a way to choke off supply routes for armed groups in the volatile Tirap, Changlang, and Longding belt.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in March that "30 km of border fencing had been completed in Manipur." State officials and local residents support the build. Despite rough terrain and security risks, the goal remains finishing the project fast to bring stability to the Northeast.
