Itanagar: The Indian government has officially standardized 27 locations and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh on Survey of India maps. This move bolsters the state’s regional identity. It counters Beijing’s repeated attempts to rename Indian sites. The Press Information Bureau released a statement on Friday confirming the update. Officials believe this provides necessary cartographic clarity.
"Identifying them formally on the Survey of India map of Arunachal Pradesh is aimed at facilitating their accurate recognition and better awareness among the public at large," the statement said. The list includes land areas, a lake, a monument, and several high-altitude passes.
Longju, located on the Line of Actual Control, is on the list. It saw a major border clash in 1959. Nearby Maja village in the Upper Subansiri district also appears. Other key sites include the high-altitude passes of Dzo La, Riza La, and Pukur La. Thag La, a pass central to the 1962 war, is included. Jairampur in the Changlang district remains a critical logistics hub for the Myanmar border.
The full list includes Bisa, Sambho Sarovar, Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Buddhamandir, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, and Baisakhi. It also adds the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, and Kamlang Nagar, which sits near the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary.
New Delhi labels China’s renaming efforts as vain and preposterous. Beijing refers to the state as Zangnan and released lists of names in 2017, 2021, and 2023. India rejects these as baseless narratives. The government asserts that such fictitious names cannot change the fact that Arunachal Pradesh remains an integral part of the country.
