Itanagar: New Delhi moved to secure its borders on Friday. The government formally standardized 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh on official Survey of India maps. This push ensures administrative clarity and uniform naming across official records.

The move counters Beijing. China has repeatedly tried to rename areas in the border state, which it calls Zangnan, by issuing lists of Chinese names in 2017, 2021, and 2023. India dismissed these efforts as vain and preposterous. Officials maintain that assigning fictitious names to Indian territory cannot alter the undeniable reality that the region remains an integral part of the country.

The updated list includes critical border sites and high-altitude features. Among them is Longju, located along the Line of Actual Control, where Chinese forces sparked a 1959 confrontation. Other inclusions are the Maja village in Upper Subansiri district, the logistical hub of Jairampur in Changlang district, and strategic mountain passes including Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La, and Thag La. Thag La holds significance as the site of opening battles during the 1962 India-China war.

The government stated, "Identifying them formally on the Survey of India map of Arunachal Pradesh is aimed at facilitating their accurate recognition and better awareness among the public at large."

Additional sites include the high-altitude Sambho Sarovar lake and the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial, which honors 1962 war hero Trilok Singh Thapa. The map also recognizes Bisa, Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Buddhamandir, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, and Kamlang Nagar, situated near the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary. The revised data is now live on the Survey of India website.
