Gangtok: Trade returns to the high-altitude Nathu La pass. The border route between India and China will reopen on August 1. It marks the end of a six-year shutdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sikkim Commerce and Industries Secretary Karma D. Youtso confirmed the state wrapped up infrastructure repairs and security prep despite harsh mountain weather.
Crews faced a major backlog after the Integrated Check Post and the Sherathang Trade Mart fell into disrepair during the long closure. Heavy snowfall slowed the work. A trial run starts July 30 to stress-test documentation and logistics. Authorities have cleared 38 traders for entry so far. They might extend the application window pending word from the Ministry of External Affairs and the State Intelligence Bureau.
Security is tight. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police added extra personnel to the post. For the first time, an exclusive women's platoon will operate at Sherathang. Trade hours run Monday through Thursday starting at 7:30 am IST. Each trader can handle a maximum of Rs 2 lakh in goods per day. Officials noted that existing export lists and operating procedures remain active. As Youtso stated, "The state has completed all necessary infrastructure repairs, administrative arrangements and security preparations despite harsh weather and damage caused by years of inactivity."
