Itanagar: Indian and Chinese military commanders met Sunday in the Kibithoo sector of Arunachal Pradesh. They convened at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point to review the Line of Actual Control. The goal is keeping the peace. Lt. General Girish Kalia, who leads the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, headed the Indian delegation.
Neither side released an official statement on the meeting. This session follows an August 25 discussion in Beijing between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Those two act as special representatives for the 3,488-km boundary dispute. They agreed on eight points to improve border management, including new meeting spots for military commanders.
Tensions remain in the Upper Subansiri district. Reports indicate repeated face-offs between the Indian Army and the Chinese People's Liberation Army in the remote Taksin area. These confrontations grew serious late in July. The exact status of that area is not clear.
New Delhi and Beijing are working to stabilize ties after the 2020 Galwan Valley standoff. That clash pushed relations to their lowest point since 1962. During the recent Beijing talks, the Ministry of External Affairs noted that "peace and tranquillity in the border areas were essential for the continued development and progress of India-China ties." This is the third round of special representative talks since both nations reached an understanding in October 2024 to resolve the Ladakh situation.
