Meghalaya Opens Phase Two of Shillong Technology Park

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma opened the second phase of the Shillong Technology Park in Umsawli on September 23. The project cost Rs 121 crore and adds 1.8 lakh square feet of tech space. Most of the facility was already booked before the opening, proving firms want high-end space in the city. The facility hosts both local outfits and multinational companies.

Sangma addressed the crowd during the event. "This is real. The signing of the agreement is real. The jobs we are creating are real. We don't want big stories and big MoUs. We will do a few things but do them well," he said. He described the completion as a dream come true, originating from a vision first pitched back in 2008.

The state government wants this park to move beyond basic IT work to become a broader innovation hub. Sangma claims the state economy has doubled since 2018 and expects another double by 2032. To hit that mark, the administration is pushing forward with a new Secretariat, administrative city projects, road links to Guwahati, and runway expansions at Shillong Airport.

Officials are betting on a young workforce, as half of the state population is under 20. The government is funding skill programs through the Meghalaya State Skill Development Mission and a new engineering college. Sangma wants industry leaders to help design training courses to match market needs. Attendees at the ceremony included BJP minister Sanbor Shullai, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil Ahammed, and IT Department officials.
