Thieves and Scammers Hit Shillong in Recent Crime Spree

Shillong: Shillong is reeling from a wave of thefts. Unknown suspects hit across the city in just four days. Daribha Pyngrope reported her scooter, ML-05AA-6698, stolen from her home in Lad Nongkrem on July 21. That same day, Baharul Alom lost his motorcycle, AS-01FZ-1003, at a Police Bazar parking lot. Harby More Lyngdoh found his bike, ML-05AD-7019, gone from his Mawpat Nongkynjoin home at 3 am. Nicky Supuh reported a stolen scooter, ML-05Z-4324, taken between July 20 and 21 at Mawpat Shaw-Shaw. Tengean K Sangma lost a scooter, ML-10B-9877, in Kench’s Trace on July 22. Mutong village also saw a theft when Theodora Dkhar lost her scooter, ML-04D-9175, at 4 am on July 21.

The crime moved beyond vehicles. William KR Marak reported his motorcycle, ML-08C-4002, stolen on July 18 in Bolpu Chiring. Inspector of Excise Balsrang K Marak returned to his Ampati quarters on July 21 to find an AC outer unit missing. Break-ins spiked as well. Thieves stripped copper wires from Mawngap Lower Primary School on the night of July 19. Two suspects raided the Mission Compound home of Noel Tariang at 3 am on July 22, taking power tools and a camera.

Digital fraud is rising. A Shillong resident lost Rs 11,500 after ordering car parts from a YouTube channel called Carholic. The seller, Sanjay Meena, never delivered the goods. "Later, the complainant realised that he has been cheated." A West Jaiñtia Hills victim lost Rs 1.8 lakh when thieves cloned a SIM card belonging to Asraf Ansari to drain his bank accounts between July 16 and 20.
