Wave of Thefts and Fraud Sweeps Shillong and Beyond

Shillong: A surge of crime hit Meghalaya this past week. Thieves are cleaning out homes and parking lots across the state. In Shillong, Yumnam Jetly Meitei reported a laptop stolen from his Cleve Colony home on August 3 at 9 am. That same morning, Rahul Dev lost his scooter, license plate ML-05W-2135, in Rilbong. Criminals are emboldened.

School security failed on August 2. DNA Model HS School in Bhaitbari lost a battery, an inverter, two CPUs, a projector, and a Jio WiFi router worth Rs. 1.09 lakh. CCTV recorded the break-in. Elsewhere, the Mendipathar Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society lost rubber sheets on August 4. Ringstar Pariong reported two cattle stolen from his Mawlaisyiem village cowshed on July 28.

Shillong residents report a trail of missing items. Koj Tara lost a laptop, cheque book, hand cam, ear pod, and Rs. 500 on August 3. On August 2, Kamal Sunar’s scooter, ML-05U-1868, vanished from Demseiñïong. Other thefts include Ebenezer Cooper War’s motorcycle, ML-05AF-7302, stolen August 1 from Mawlai Mawroh, and Emboklang Sohtun’s scooter, ML-05U-5438, taken from Mylliem Bah. K Mordani of Luxury Company on Keating Road reported missing geysers, air conditioners, water pumps, and copper wires.

Home invasions are rising. Archana Gandhi reported a trespasser took seven pairs of shoes from her Pynthorumkhrah house on August 3. Matrujyoti Prasad Prusty lost jewelry, cash, and a laptop totaling Rs. 2 lakh on July 16, 2026. Ridahunlang Gatphoh’s Mawpat home was ransacked on July 31, 2026, and Biba Lama suffered a break-in at Lower Mawprem on August 1.

Digital scams are bleeding bank accounts dry. A Shillong man lost Rs. 73,500 on June 22 to a fraudster posing as an SBI card official. Two others, Komal Mehta and George Girard Dkhar, allegedly cheated another man out of Rs. 1.86 lakh in a March 2024 OLX car deal. In Tura, a resident lost Rs. 82,918 after installing the RMI Finance app. The victim stated, "The app continuously generated OTPs on its own" before the money vanished.

Missing vehicle reports keep piling up. Praphul Kumar Giri’s motorcycle, AS-11AG-5306, went missing from Lumshnong on August 3. Dijeng Marak’s bike, ML-08J-2801, vanished from Chibinang Bazar that same afternoon. Police found that bike abandoned near Matramchigre on August 4. Finally, on August 4 at 2:50 am, three men on a scooter snatched a phone from Akash Kumar Choudhary at Rilbong Point.
