Shillong: A Shillong court sentenced Charles Marbaniang to four years, 10 months and one day in prison for a deadly stabbing that occurred over a decade ago. District and Sessions Judge B Laitmon handed down the conviction on October 22, 2026, regarding Sadar Police Station Case No. 174(10) of 2012.
The violent encounter took place on October 8, 2012. Police received a report that Marbaniang stabbed the complainant's brother in the East Khasi Hills district. The victim died from those wounds. Sadar Police initially booked the case under Section 304 Part-I of the Indian Penal Code. Investigators later filed a chargesheet under Section 302 of the IPC in July 2013.
Under-Sub-Inspector R Ranee, now at the Mawdiangdiang Outpost, handled the investigation. The court convicted Marbaniang under Section 304 Part-I of the IPC. He must pay a fine of Rs 30,000. He faces three extra months of simple imprisonment if he fails to settle the fine. The judge noted the sentence accounts for time already served, stating he must "undergo the remaining sentence of four years, 10 months and one day" after subtracting one month and 29 days spent behind bars.
