Shillong: A West Khasi Hills court sentenced Donbor Paliar to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Wednesday. The District and Sessions Court in Nongstoin handed down the punishment after finding Paliar guilty of rape, kidnapping, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation. The case dates back to November 22, 2020, when the survivor filed an FIR at Mairang Police Station.

Police registered the matter as Case No. 42(11)2020. The investigation, led by Women Police Sub-Inspector R.R. Marak, confirmed the survivor was held, raped, and threatened at multiple locations. The judge issued specific terms for the charges under the Indian Penal Code: 10 years for rape, seven years for kidnapping, one year for wrongful confinement, and two years for criminal intimidation. These sentences run concurrently.

Financial penalties hit hard. The court imposed fines totaling Rs 70,000 and ordered Rs 3.5 lakh in compensation for the survivor under the Meghalaya Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019. Local authorities maintained a firm stance following the ruling. Police stated, "The conviction reaffirmed their commitment to protecting women and children and ensuring that crimes against them are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted."
