Shillong: A West Khasi Hills court sentenced Banphrangkupar Nongbri to life in prison. He will die behind bars. District and Sessions Judge in Nongstoin handed down the sentence on September 30 for the 2021 murders of 79-year-old Phlesis Syiem and her domestic help, 25-year-old Maitlynti Lyngdoh Marshillong. The judge also slapped Nongbri with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The victims were found dead in their Nongstoin home in August 2021. Nongbri was living in Shillong at the time while waiting for his degree results. He confessed to the crimes after police found blood-stained shoes and the victims' mobile phones in his possession. Investigators registered the case at the Nongstoin police station under Sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
Greed drove the killings. Herbert Lyngdoh, who served as the West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police during the investigation, stated the motive was robbery because "Syiem was a wealthy woman who lived with her domestic help." The court cited the nature of the murders as the reason for denying the possibility of parole.
