Shillong: Sonam Raghuvanshi surrendered to a sessions court in Shillong on Wednesday. She is accused of murdering her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their May 2025 honeymoon in Meghalaya. The Supreme Court ordered her surrender after overturning a lower court bail grant. She is now in judicial custody.
Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore businessman, vanished with his bride shortly after their marriage. A search operation followed. Police eventually discovered his body in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in the East Khasi Hills. Meghalaya Police formed a Special Investigation Team to untangle the crime.
Investigators claim the murder was a premeditated conspiracy. They allege Sonam worked with her former partner and several others to execute the killing. The case sparked national outcry over the cynical use of a honeymoon trip to hide a murder. Tourism in the Khasi Hills took a hit as the legal battle intensified.
Bipin Raghuvanshi, the victim’s brother, traveled to Shillong to track the proceedings. He viewed the defendant via video link after her surrender. He remains focused on the outcome. "We will be satisfied only when Sonam and the other accused receive the maximum punishment under the law," Bipin told reporters.
The family demands a fast-tracked trial and the death penalty. Bipin also criticized the system, alleging that police routinely ignore domestic abuse reports filed by men. He maintains that institutional bias prevents men from finding protection from spouses. The family continues to push for full custody of the accused until the court reaches a final verdict.
