Shillong: West Jaintia Hills Police arrested three men for the murder of 28-year-old Damehi Mulieh. His body turned up at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills district on July 31. The breakthrough followed a tip-off that Gumrah Police in Assam had detained a Maruti Alto K10 with registration ML05 AG 0285.

A team from the Phramer Traffic Cell headed to Cachar district to secure the car and suspects. The victim's family identified the recovered vehicle as belonging to Mulieh. "The family of the deceased later identified the vehicle as belonging to Damehi Mulieh. Based on the recovery of the vehicle and other evidence, a case of vehicle theft and murder was registered at Jowai Police Station," said Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa.

Police booked Dapjingkmen Paslein, 26, of Lakasein and Samuel Iakai, 25, of Umkyrpong on July 31. Duniwankmen Sutnga, 26, of Khaidong followed them into custody on Tuesday. Investigators charged them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

All three suspects appeared in court. Police are still piecing together the timeline of the crime. Dhanoa credited the Gumrah Police for their quick work in the detention. He advised locals to lock their cars and report odd behavior to the 112 emergency helpline.
