Guwahati: Police found the body of 22-year-old Chinki Bhuyan in a pit Saturday morning. The site sits near Bastahara High School on Ram Mandir Road in Chabua, Dibrugarh. Bhuyan had been missing since Friday. The body was in a partially undressed and decomposed state when discovered. Family members now allege that she suffered sexual assault and murder.

Officers arrested Sumit Kalandi in connection with the crime. Investigators confirm Bhuyan was a mother of a two-year-old child. She had recently gone through a divorce after one year of marriage. Reports suggest she was currently seeing Kalandi.

Authorities sent the body to a hospital for a post-mortem examination. This will determine the cause of death and confirm if any criminal act occurred. The probe remains in the early stages as officers search for clues. One official noted the lack of immediate visible marks on the victim.

A police official stated, "We have started an investigation into the death of the woman. We suspect that she was murdered. We have not found any visible marks on her body. At this stage, it is too early to ascertain anything as the investigation is still in its preliminary stage."
