Guwahati: Dibrugarh police apprehended alleged conman Imtiaz Ali at his residence between Chiring Chapori and Amolapatty. He refused to open his door. Officers broke it down with a magistrate watching. He finally went into custody.
Ali allegedly cheated people out of crores of rupees. He promised government jobs and shop allotments to his marks. He frequently lied about his background. He claimed to be a doctor and a lawyer at different times.
Officers searched his garage during the raid. They found a Mercedes-Benz with plate AS 01 TC 2792, a Toyota Innova Crysta marked AS 01 EL 1183, and a Hyundai i10 bearing number AS 06 T 7286. Police seized the Innova Crysta but left the other two cars. Two criminal cases sit on the books at Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station. Authorities also detained his wife, Manisha Begum, who uses the alias Pinky. She remains under suspicion for her role in the scheme.

Records identify the suspect as Imtiaz Hussain. He previously threw his hat in the ring as a candidate for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2009 parliamentary election.
The dragnet began in February after a string of complaints hit the precinct. Officers noted that a warrant was active against Hussain, but he dodged capture by constantly shifting his hideouts. The officer-in-charge at the station confirmed that authorities officially arrested both Hussain and his wife, Manisha Begum, rather than just detaining them.
