Guwahati: Assam minister Biswajit Daimary shocked observers by praising the United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA, for shielding the state for half a century. He spoke at a gathering in Dirak Nawajyoti village, located in the Tinsukia district near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The event marked the central foundation day of the Matak Yuva Chhatra Sanmilan.

Daimary received the Bengmara Samanway Award during the ceremony. He credited the Moran-Matak communities with forming the backbone of the organization. He noted that Paresh Baruah, the commander-in-chief of the group, hails from the Matak community.

The minister offered a bold take on the group's history. He claimed that the Moran-Matak people essentially saved the state. He told the crowd, "Because of the ULFA, no one has been able to lay a hand on Assam."

Daimary did not stop there. He suggested that local influence prevented the state from collapsing into chaos over the last 50 years. He argued that the outfit remained an unshakable force, asserting, "ULFA is a force that others have been unable to shake for the past 50 years."

The minister emphasized that the leadership core came directly from these communities. He stated that the condition of the region might be unrecognizable today without their specific involvement. He remarked that only God knows what the state would have become without their intervention.
