Guwahati: Extortion letters hit Doomdooma. About 10 businessmen in the Tinsukia district of Assam reported receiving threats sent under the banner of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent). These documents featured signatures attributed to finance secretary Lt. Gen. Michael Asom and assistant finance secretary Major Abhimanyu Asom. Panic spread through the local business community.
Affected shop owners contacted the police to report the demands. The group quickly cleared its name. ULFA (I) issued a formal statement calling the letters fake. They denied sending any correspondence to individuals in Doomdooma.
The outfit claims an unidentified group forged signatures and misused the names of their leadership to run a scam. They issued a warning to the public. "The organisation appealed to businessmen in Doomdooma not to cooperate with the group and urged them to remain alert." Police are investigating the matter, though no further details are currently available.
