Guwahati: Moranhat Police picked up two men in Charaideo district for running an extortion racket under the banner of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom. The suspects are Mohammad Abdul Sattar of Dholbagan and Partha Pratim Barua of Nakhhat. They face allegations of threatening residents to squeeze cash out of them.
Authorities mounted the operation alongside the 20 Assam Rifles. Charaideo police brass, specifically the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Headquarters and the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Security, spearheaded the raid. Officers suspect the pair worked as linkmen for a larger extortion ring.
Investigators currently hold both men at the Moranhat Police Station for interrogation. They want to know how deep the connections go. According to local officials, "Police have launched a further investigation to identify and trace other persons who may be connected to the alleged extortion racket." The probe continues as police hunt for the remaining players.
