Assam police arrest fake officer for extortion scheme

Guwahati: Cops in Assam caught a con man Sunday night. Panchgram police grabbed Hasan Ahmed Choudhury in the Algapur Bazar area of Hailakandi district. He faces charges for posing as a police officer to run an extortion racket.

A victim filed a report after losing a motorcycle in Jankibazar months ago. Choudhury stepped in and claimed he worked for the department. He took cash from the youth, promising to track down the missing bike. He then vanished. Police sources confirmed he also shook down others by claiming he was a close associate of the Superintendent of Police. He went into hiding once he had the loot.

Authorities seized a vehicle found with the accused. Detectives are now grilling him. They want to know the scale of the fraud. "Police have seized a vehicle allegedly used by the accused and are questioning him to ascertain the extent of the alleged fraud and identify others who may have been targeted," said investigators.
