Guwahati: Locals found a semi-decomposed body near Gidingpur village on October 23. They were hunting for firewood in the forest around 1:30 pm when they stumbled upon the remains near the Maibang Police Station. It is the second such grim discovery in the district in four days. Murder is suspected.

Police teams arrived quickly. Maibang SDPO Rahul Kalita and Dima Hasao Senior Superintendent of Police Ripunjoy Kakoti led the investigation at the scene. They moved the remains to Diphu Medical College for an autopsy. Investigators hope the medical examination will pin down the cause of death and reveal who the person was. "The identity of the deceased and other details are yet to be established," police officials stated.

Another unidentified body turned up on October 20. That person was pulled from the Diyung River near a railway bridge by the New Haflong Railway Station. Authorities have not identified that individual either. These back-to-back findings have spooked residents. Detectives are still working the cases.
