Kohima: Health workers in Wokha finished a three-day training program on October 23. The DAKSHATA sessions took place at the Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital conference hall. Staff gathered there starting October 21 to sharpen their skills. The program focuses on evidence-based practices for labor, delivery, and postpartum care.
Mhonbeni Ezung, the District Programme Manager for the National Health Mission, opened the event. She noted that mentors currently visit delivery points throughout the district to check if facilities meet safety standards. She pushed staff to stay sharp. "DAKSHATA means adroitness or skill and is a subset of the broader LAQSHYA initiative," said Dr. Benchumi Humtsoe, the obstetrician and gynaecologist who served as a primary resource person.
Sessions covered technical requirements and practical tasks. Sorenpeni Lotha, a Community Health Officer at the Pongitong Health and Wellness Centre, guided participants through labor stages, triage, birth companions, and the safe childbirth checklist. Instructors led drills on newborn resuscitation, Active Management of the Third Stage of Labour, and essential newborn care. Training also addressed infection prevention, postpartum haemorrhage, partograph use, and the Safe Delivery App.
