Kohima: At least 28 people fell ill following a birthday party in Wokha on August 3. The guests reported symptoms like vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain roughly seven hours after the 9 am event. Many victims required hospital care for their ailments.
Twenty-one patients arrived at Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital starting at 9:50 pm. Nineteen people checked into the hospital, while two others received outpatient treatment. Clinical reports noted patients suffered from hypotension and headaches. Hospital staff confirmed the illness appeared consistent with food-borne pathogens. The hospital stated: "The symptoms appeared consistent with food poisoning."
By August 7, 17 patients had been discharged from Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital, leaving two still under observation. No deaths occurred, and no patients needed transfers. Other party-goers sought care elsewhere. Panacea Nursing Home treated and discharged five people. Mhondamo Memorial Hospital admitted and released two others.
Investigators pointed to meat, dal, chick peas, pickles, and papad as the likely culprits. Officials from the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare collected food samples alongside a pickle sample for lab analysis. The hospital alerted the Chief Medical Officer to the surge in cases. Results from the testing process remain pending.
