Kohima: Wokha police joined forces with local health agencies to warn students about the dangers of addiction. They held the Drug Trafficking and Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign on August 28 at the Police Baptist Church conference hall. The event drew 80 participants, including 65 students from Santsuo School and the Unit Regimental School of DEF Wokha.
Organizers included DEF Wokha, ANTF Wokha, the District Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, and various health units. Biren Lotha, Additional SP and Nodal Officer for ANTF, broke down the mechanics of drug trafficking and identified regional transit hotspots. He urged the community to stay sharp.
District Welfare Officer C James Ezung covered the basics of intoxication and drug types. He gave the students a clear directive for handling peer pressure, telling them to "Refuse, Resist and Report" any encounters with illicit substances. He also pushed the students to talk to elders when they hit a wall.
The session turned to the health risks of tobacco. Tshopeu Khutsoh, a psychologist at the district hospital, noted that 274 million people use tobacco worldwide. She warned that India remains a top producer while highlighting the link between tobacco and oral cancer. She reminded the room that selling tobacco to minors is illegal and shops must stay at least 100 yards away from schools. Dr Motsuo Memorial Hospital provides free cessation treatment for anyone looking to quit.
The event wrapped up with an interactive Q&A session alongside medical testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis. Richard Lotha chaired the proceedings, and Kuhlhi Khape, officer-in-charge of Wokha Police Station, offered the final vote of thanks.
