Kohima: Wokha Traffic Control Unit agents swarmed town streets on September 30. They targeted riders without helmets and those packing too many passengers onto two-wheelers. Officers clamped cars left in forbidden spots. The crackdown follows ignored warnings and previous outreach efforts.
Traffic In-charge N Eyingo Lotha oversaw the operation. First-time rule breakers paid 1,000 rupees. Repeat offenders now face harsher penalties including potential jail time. "The enforcement drive was being carried out despite repeated awareness programmes and warnings to motorists," Lotha said.
Lotha warned parents against cramming school children onto bikes. He tagged the practice as a major risk to student safety. Roadside debris also drew fire. Construction gear and bad parking block the National Highway running through town. Officials previously ordered these hazards moved. If owners fail to act, police will clear the roads themselves.
The department continues to clamp improperly parked vehicles to speed up traffic flow. Lotha expects cooperation. He also reminded residents that underage driving remains a serious crime. Authorities plan to keep hunting for violators to clean up the town streets.

The recent crackdown emerged from a joint inspection involving the district administration, local police, and the traffic department. This collective team previously issued direct orders for property owners to clear the highway of obstructions.
