Suspected Toxic Liquor Kills Another in Mokokchung

Kohima: A 30-year-old resident of Alempang Ward died at Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital on the morning of September 29. He arrived unconscious at 5:59 am after vomiting following a night of drinking. He died at 7:25 am. Medical Superintendent Alemwapang Aier confirmed the death, bringing the facility's total count to six admissions and two fatalities linked to suspected spurious liquor.

Police previously confirmed the death of a 37-year-old Yimkhiung community member on September 26. The victim arrived at the hospital at 2:50 pm with abdominal pain, weakness, and breathing trouble. He died later that night at 9:30 pm. Medical staff noted a history of alcohol use prior to his admission. Authorities sent samples to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Guwahati for analysis.

A Special Investigation Team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Bunglang Chang is handling the case. Officers have already arrested 19 people during district-wide raids and seized significant amounts of alcohol. Aier said, "six people had been admitted to IMDH so far in connection with consumption of suspected spurious-liquor, of who two died." Local officials and civil society groups have since adopted a zero tolerance policy toward liquor sales in the area.
