Jorhat Police Bust Honey-Trapping Extortion Ring

Guwahati: Jorhat police arrested five people for running a honey-trapping and extortion racket. The arrests followed a complaint from a private-sector bank manager based in Tinsukia. The victim filed an FIR on October 2 after months of harassment. He met a woman on Instagram in July. She lured him to a rented house in Seoni Ali on August 14. He arrived at 1 am. Two unidentified men burst in shortly after. They filmed the encounter and threatened to leak the video to the victim's family and social media.

The gang squeezed three lakh rupees out of the man. They first demanded two lakh, then squeezed him for another one lakh. They did not stop there. The group demanded an additional five lakh rupees. The victim finally reached his breaking point and contacted the authorities. Hrishikesh Hazarika, Officer-in-Charge of the Jorhat Sadar Police Station, assembled a team to hunt the extortionists. “This is a pure case of honey-trapping,” Hazarika said.

Police arrested Sanjib Das and Ankit Paul on October 2. A court sent both men to judicial custody. Investigators soon identified Moromi Das Neog as the mastermind. Police tracked her to Dibrugarh and took her into custody. Officers also apprehended Baby Bora and her husband, Ankit Bora. The total count hit five suspects. Three men and two women now face justice. Registered as Case No. 338/2026, the investigation remains active. Phone records suggest the gang targeted other wealthy individuals. Police are currently digging through digital evidence to find more victims.

Investigators believe the ring cast a wider net than previously realized. Phone data suggests the suspects systematically hunted for prey among businessmen and high-earning professionals in both public and private sectors.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident in the Bongaigaon district, police took a man into custody after locals caught him for an alleged assault. On October 6, 22-year-old Ikramul Alam reportedly ambushed a woman returning from computer classes in the No. 1 Nayapara area. The attacker allegedly covered her face with a cloth before attempting to assault her on the road. The victim escaped and alerted her family, prompting residents to detain Alam, a construction worker from Hojai, until police arrived. Authorities are now checking claims that the suspect also tried to kill the woman.
