Assam Woman Attacked in Violent Pond Dispute

Guwahati: A group of people assaulted a woman in Tinsukia village on Tuesday, October 6. The attack took place in broad daylight under the jurisdiction of the Juria police station in Assam’s Nagaon district. The victim was allegedly surrounded, attacked, and subjected to molestation. According to the complaint, the attackers tore her clothes and engaged in inappropriate physical contact.

The violence stems from a seven-year-old property feud. Nurul Amin held a pond on mortgage from villager Mubarak Ali, but Mubarak’s elder brother, Zakir Hussain, repeatedly tried to seize control of the water body. These families have a history of arguments and brawls. Nurul Amin previously reported Zakir Hussain’s family to the local police.

Trouble flared Tuesday when Nurul Amin arrived at the pond. Zakir Hussain and several others blocked his path. Nurul Amin named Zakir Hussain, Adilur Rahman, Atiq Mustafa, Aleha Khatun, and Afia Khatun in his formal complaint. Police now have a recording of the event, as "a video of the alleged assault has also surfaced, purportedly capturing the incident." Juria police have opened an investigation into the attack and the long-standing property dispute.
