Journalist attacked with machetes at Assam roadside eatery

Guwahati: A group of attackers armed with machetes and knives assaulted journalist Barun Bikash Bora on the Borghat bypass near Nagaon. Bora works for the web portal Drishtikon NE. He arrived at the local dhaba to investigate reports of illegal activity. The situation turned violent fast.

The dhaba owner and a mob of youths surrounded the reporter. They trapped him after he tried to film the scene on his camera. The group beat him and threatened him with sharp weapons. Police from the Nagaon Sadar Station and Borghat outpost arrived to find him bloodied and in critical condition. They pulled him from the crowd to safety.

Local residents claim the roadside eateries in the area act as hubs for sex trafficking and other crimes. Neighbors say these businesses regularly intimidate customers and members of the press. Meanwhile, the accused have pushed back against the allegations. They claim the journalist was shaking them down, stating he was "demanding money in the name of news coverage."

Authorities have not verified these claims. Locals and various organizations are now calling for immediate arrests. The investigation remains active as the community reacts to the brutality. No update on the medical status of the victim is available.
