Road Conditions Force Assam Woman to Deliver in Pickup Truck

Guwahati: A woman gave birth to her child in the back of a commercial pickup truck early Wednesday morning. She was en route to the Sri Sri Pitambar Deva Goswami District Hospital in Majuli when labor began. The woman, wife of Manoj Pegu, lives in Jugibari village under the Lohit Khabolu Gaon Panchayat.

The trip to the hospital covers roughly 20 kilometres. Poor road connectivity in the riverine Lohit Khabolu area along the Lakhimpur-Majuli boundary stopped emergency vehicles from reaching her home. She departed in the pickup truck at 4.30 am. The journey forced the vehicle across rough roads and weak bridges.

She delivered the baby on an embankment at Uttar Dambukial village before reaching the clinic. Staff at the hospital later admitted the mother and newborn. Doctors report both are in healthy condition. The incident highlights the ongoing danger residents face in these isolated districts. Locals struggle to get medical help because, as reports note, "poor road connectivity is a particular challenge for pregnant women who need to reach hospitals for delivery."
