Three Reporters Arrested in Dhubri Extortion Case

Guwahati: Dhubri police arrested three journalists accused of extorting a local medical practitioner. Sahil Shaikh, a correspondent for a private satellite news channel, faces charges alongside local news portal employees Dewan Jahangir Alom and Ashraful Alom. The group targeted Dr. Chotka Rahman on Sunday. They demanded a payment of 3 lakh rupees.

The doctor feared for his safety. He paid 65,000 rupees via PhonePe and another 20,000 rupees in cash to the owner of an under-construction medical shop. That owner filed a formal complaint at the Dhubri Sadar Police Station. Officers tracked the digital payment to an account in Fakirganj owned by Mostofa Firdoz Amed, who was also taken into custody.

Police registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 61(2), 329(4), 127(2), 308(5), 309(4), 351(2), 351(3), and 3(5). The incident is logged as Dhubri Sadar Police Station Case No. 354/2026. Investigators continue to hunt for the fourth suspect, Soiodur Rahman. He works as a correspondent for Assam Talks. Police say he is currently "absconding" while the investigation proceeds.
