Guwahati: Assam police arrested two men after a brazen theft forced Dhubri Medical College and Hospital to shut down its dialysis unit on Saturday. The heist stripped the facility of electrical wires and essential gear. Patients arriving for scheduled, life-saving treatments found the doors closed.
Officers identified the suspects as 24-year-old Rahul Haque of Jhargrapara Part III and 26-year-old Sajidul Mondal of Jhargrapara Part I. Police recovered the stolen goods following the arrests. The facility remained offline through the weekend before staff managed to get the center running again by Sunday.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal blasted the crime. He insisted that stealing from a medical facility is not a minor property offense when lives are on the line. He said, "an incident of theft at a hospital should not be treated as an ordinary property crime when it disrupts essential medical services."
Singhal demanded answers regarding the suspects and their motives. He publicly praised Superintendent Dina Raja, Principal Anku Moni Saikia, and the hospital staff for their rapid work to restore services. Authorities are now pushing for a deeper probe into the circumstances of the break-in.
