Guwahati: Dhubri police arrested a hospital nurse and her husband after a botched abortion killed a 35-year-old woman. Maleka Bibi died following an unauthorized procedure at a residential clinic in Rowa Part-II. Her husband, Hazrat Ali, filed the formal complaint that triggered the raid.
Habiba Yasmin works as a nurse at Dhubri Medical College and Hospital. She allegedly posed as a qualified gynaecologist to perform high-risk surgeries from her Gauripur home. Investigators arrested Yasmin and her husband, Mostafizur Rahman, during a joint operation involving the District Crime Team and local police. They seized abortion drugs and medical gear from the house.
A police official stated, "The accused allegedly exploited her position as a nurse to impersonate a specialist and conduct unauthorised medical procedures, putting several lives at risk."
Authorities booked the pair under Case No. 262/2026 at the Dhubri Police Station. Charges include culpable homicide, cheating by personation, and running an illegal medical establishment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are now checking how long the clinic operated and if others helped refer patients.
