Kohima: Kohima officials pushed for an immediate end to child marriage on Monday. The district administration joined forces with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, the Sakhi-One Stop Centre, and the social welfare department. They met at the Kohima DC conference hall for the International Day of the Girl Child. They centered the event on the global theme to end child marriage and invest in girls' rights.
DC B. Henok Buchem led the call. He demanded that everyone renew their commitment to wipe out the practice and create a safer society. He highlighted the lasting impact of female education. "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world," Buchem stated. He told the crowd to help struggling families by using government welfare schemes or personal charity.
Buchem also pushed for better attendance at the ongoing HPV vaccination drive. He warned that public awareness for the cervical cancer program remains dangerously low. He demanded widespread action to fix the gap. During technical talks, Child Welfare Committee member Wapanginla Kichu detailed fundamental protections for children. She covered rights to education, healthcare, equality, and protection against child labor and sexual harassment.
