Assam Students Rally to Protect Hoolock Gibbons

Guwahati: Students at Barekuri National School in the Tinsukia district took to the streets for an awareness rally. They marched to protect the hoolock gibbon. These primates face growing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation across Northeast India.

The Barekuri Development Committee organized the event with the Primate Research Centre, Northeast India, Barekuri National School, and the Dibru-Saikhowa Wildlife Conservation Committee. Participants aimed to drum up community support for forest preservation, which serves as the primary home for the apes.

Barekuri maintains a unique reputation for its local efforts to shield these animals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi once praised this initiative during his Mann Ki Baat radio show, stating the program helped in "bringing national attention to the conservation initiative."

The state government recognized these efforts in 2024 with the Asom Gaurav Award. Organizers hope to turn this momentum into long-term protection for the region's natural heritage by engaging the next generation.
