Guwahati: Tinsukia district officials shut down the pork trade in Sadiya this week. The move follows a confirmed outbreak of African swine fever in Khutipathar village. District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan invoked the Disaster Management Act of 2005 to lock down the area. He acted fast.

The administration declared Khutipathar the epicenter. A one-kilometer radius surrounding the village is now an infected zone. Officials set a ten-kilometer surveillance zone around that perimeter. These zones restrict all movement of pigs and pork products into or out of the district.

Culling operations began on October 14 and will run through October 16. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department teams are managing the slaughter and sanitation efforts. They must keep detailed records of the process.

Shops selling pork must close for 30 days. No pork sales are allowed anywhere in the subdivision. Authorities also blocked all shipments of pigs or meat products to and from neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. Commissioner Sattawan issued a clear warning regarding these new mandates. "Violations will attract legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita," the order states.
