Guwahati: Rubi Baruah fell six feet while working at the New Hapjan Tea Factory on October 10. The 26-year-old worker suffered multiple fractures, a waist injury requiring two stitches, and a head injury during the 11 pm accident. She now demands that the management pay her medical bills in full. The total costs exceed Rs 40,000.

Baruah spent three-and-a-half days in a private nursing home in Tinsukia. She says the company offered only Rs 20,000 for her care. "The management should pay my bill in full and arrange transportation and the prescribed medicines," she said.

Utpal Baruah, a security contractor overseeing factory affairs, claims the bill looks suspicious. He says he offered the cash to the victim's husband, Raju Baruah, who refused the payment. Raju Baruah previously claimed he had to borrow money just to pay the hospital security deposit while his wife was unconscious in intensive care.

Management committee member Tarpan Deka stated that the company was not notified when Rubi moved to the private nursing home after leaving the Assam Medical College and Hospital on October 11. Factory staff allegedly pressured the family to transfer her again to cut costs. The company claims the fall occurred because Rubi entered an unauthorized area of the processing unit. No CCTV exists to verify the claim. The site had no safety oversight during the late shift.

No FIR has been filed. Official inspections by police or the Labour Department remain unconfirmed. The dispute continues as the worker recovers.
