Guwahati: Rohit Sharma died Friday morning after a train struck him in Tinsukia. The 28-year-old was walking across the tracks near the Navapukhuri Railway Gate around 11 am. He stayed glued to his phone. He did not hear the warning.
Shunting operations were active in the Tinsukia Railway Division at the time. The train driver spotted Sharma on the tracks and blasted the horn to clear the path. When that failed, the driver hit the emergency brakes. It was too late. The train slammed into him.
R.K. Yadav, Officer-in-Charge of the Railway Protection Force, explained the tragedy. "The driver observed him and gave a horn, but as he was talking on the mobile phone, it went unheard. An emergency brake was then applied, but unfortunately he came in contact with the train and the incident occurred," Yadav said.
Tinsukia Police and RPF officers arrived shortly after the collision. They moved quickly to secure the scene. Officials are now processing the legal steps. Following the death, Yadav pledged to shutter every illegal railway crossing in the area within three days to prevent future accidents.
