Guwahati: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in the Morigaon district of Assam is open for business. Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah officially kicked off the 2026-27 tourism season alongside police, local residents, and department officials. Workers fixed the internal roads and pathways to handle the incoming crowds.
The sanctuary deployed 30 jeeps for safari routes. Visitors can also book elephant rides to track animals across the 38-square-kilometre park. The area holds 106 endangered one-horned rhinoceroses. It also supports wild buffaloes, boars, and various bird species.
Officials expect steady foot traffic throughout the year. The sanctuary remains a primary draw for sightseers near and far. Last season, more than 42,000 domestic tourists and 763 foreigners visited the site. Forest department staff manage the operations, noting that "safari services forming a key part of the tourism experience" remain the priority for the coming months.
