Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced plans to shutter government schools suffering from zero or low student enrollment. He wants these closed facilities replaced with residential institutions to bolster education access in remote, hard-to-reach areas. The government is already looking at locations where students currently trek over a kilometer to reach their classrooms.
Saha detailed the rollout of Eklavya Model Residential Schools within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. Twelve of these institutions are already open, with six more coming soon. Officials plan to launch the remaining units quickly. The state government holds approval to build the full slate of schools throughout the council districts.
The move addresses a specific resource gap. "Some schools in ADC areas had teachers but little or no student enrolment. The government is considering closing such institutions and establishing residential schools in areas where students have to travel a kilometre or more to access educational facilities," Saha said during a visit to Unakoti district.
Saha spent time slamming the previous Left Front administration. He accused them of favoring empty publicity over real progress. He claimed the opposition is losing ground because they failed to improve lives while in power. The current government intends to judge its success by outcomes rather than talking points.
