Agartala: Tripura has brought piped drinking water to 86.52 percent of its rural households. Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the figures during the 10th session of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly on Thursday. State data shows 647,437 of 750,449 total households now have active connections. That is a major jump from the 3.24 percent coverage reported when the Jal Jeevan Mission launched on August 15, 2019.
The scale of work is massive. Over the past three years, the government connected 191,106 rural families across 1,193 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees. Despite these gains, pockets of the state remain thirsty.
Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma pressed the government on water shortages within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) regions. He cited a recent road blockade in the Mungiakami hills where Minister Kishor Barman was stranded. Debbarma demanded immediate action to solve these recurring water crises.
Saha, who oversees the Drinking Water and Sanitation department, acknowledged that the hilly geography makes standard infrastructure nearly impossible. He said, "In many locations, conventional deep tube wells cannot be installed because of unsuitable groundwater conditions."
The state is shifting tactics to hit its 100 percent goal. Engineers are now collecting water from canals, streams, and waterfalls, then pumping the supply to elevated storage points. While coverage in the TTAADC zone currently hovers around 80 percent, individual sites vary from 85 to 100 percent. The administration continues to use water treatment plants and deep tube wells to finish the job. The government is working with the Central Government to bridge the remaining gaps.
