Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha wants traffic police to use artificial intelligence to clear the state's clogged roads. Rapid growth in the number of vehicles in Agartala forced the move. He laid out this plan Saturday during an event at the AD Nagar police lines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi supports using tech to fix public issues. Saha told officers, "I appeal to the traffic police to use AI-based technological support to improve overall traffic management in the state, especially in the city, where the number of vehicles is increasing rapidly."
The state already tracks danger zones through the Integrated Road Accident Data and Electronic Data Based Accident Report systems. These tools work. Road accidents dropped 6 per cent in 2025. Fatalities fell 13 per cent over that same year. Electronic traffic systems now monitor key spots in the Agartala Municipal Corporation zone. A new multi-level parking facility in the city also aims to ease gridlock.
Saha has his eyes on private car owners. He is weighing an extra tax for households holding more than one vehicle. He wants police sign-off on every sale or resale of two-wheelers and cars to limit ownership. The government just dropped Rs 1.29 crore on new safety gear for officers. This equipment arrived just before the four-day Durga Puja festival. Huge crowds and heavy traffic are expected for the holiday.
