Agartala: Tripura plans a Rs 100 crore overhaul of the Gumti hydroelectric project at Dumboor. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the restoration on Friday. The state aims to push generating capacity back to 11 MW. Work begins this December.

The plant is 56 years old. It sits at the confluence of the Raima and Saima rivers. While designed for 15 MW, output slumped to just 3 MW under the current BJP administration. Then the 2024 floods hit. They caused serious damage. This forced the state to call in experts from NIT, IIT Guwahati, BHEL, and NHPC to conduct a detailed assessment. Officials even deployed an underwater robot from Kerala to survey the dam structures.

Nath spoke at a community awareness event in Tirthamukh. He highlighted the site as the state's first power project and a hub for fish farming. The lakes support thousands of families. He pointed to the 2021 dam safety law as a vital step forward. The minister credited the federal government for these changes. He noted, "Protecting people who live downstream remains the government's top priority."

Mandatory inspections now happen before and after every monsoon. These checks aim to spot risks early. Beyond the plant, the state Cabinet recently approved a plan to build mobile towers. They will bring BSNL services to the most remote areas of Tripura. Work starts soon.
