Agartala: Delhi Police detained Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, and several CPI(M) leaders on October 10. The group was protesting to demand the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The move sparked immediate backlash from the opposition.

Chaudhury slammed the Union government following the arrest. He accused the Centre of shielding Kumar and stifling constitutional rights. The police action drew sharp condemnation from the veteran politician. He issued a bold warning regarding the administration's longevity. "The beginning of the downfall of the Modi government has started today," Chaudhury said.

The CPI(M) leader alleged that officials are suppressing dissent while ignoring concerns from opposition parties. He claimed that the rights of young people and students remain under direct threat. Chaudhury further targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over reported service disruptions. He pointed to restrictions on hotels, restaurants, bus services, and internet connectivity across Delhi as evidence of an assault on democratic freedom. He urged the public to defend the country's independent institutions. The party remains uncertain about their next steps while custody continues.
