Agartala: Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar accused local political rivals of blocking democracy on Monday. Speaking at a rally in Mohanbhog, the veteran CPI(M) leader claimed the BJP and Tipra Motha pressured candidates to drop out of the upcoming ADC Village Committee elections. He warned that this interference ruins the democratic process.
Sarkar stated that despite these threats, the Left Front alliance managed to field a large slate of contenders. "CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI(ML) had jointly managed to field 2,004 candidates despite the alleged pressure," Sarkar said. He noted that the opposition expected a clear path for their own candidates but failed to clear the field.
The former CM also targeted the ruling parties for their tactics. He claimed the Tipra Motha is driving a wedge between Bengali and tribal residents, while the BJP pushes sectarian divides between Hindus and Muslims. He warned that both organizations use conflict to stir up violence for political gain.
Sarkar linked these local issues to a broader national trend. He argued that farmers and workers are increasingly pushing back against the BJP-led central government. He called the village elections a vital test for voters to exercise their rights.
The meeting included appearances by Sonamura subdivision secretary and MLA Shyamal Chakraborty, along with state committee members Ratan Saha and Suresh Das. The party introduced candidates representing the villages of Anandapur, Urmai, and South Taibandal to the assembled crowd.
