Guwahati: Communist Party of India (Marxist) members swarmed the Doomdooma Revenue Circle Office in Tinsukia, Assam, on Friday. They demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar step down immediately. The activists claim the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls threatens to strip eligible citizens of their right to vote.

Protesters filled the streets with placards and slogans. They accused the Election Commission of creating a system that risks mass exclusion of voters. Several organizations joined the push, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, All India Kisan Sabha, All India Democratic Women's Association, Democratic Youth Federation of India, and the Students' Federation of India.

Critics argue the current verification process hurts the poor, elderly, and migrant workers. These groups often struggle with strict documentation requirements. One protester stated, "The right to vote is a constitutional right, and no eligible citizen should be deprived of it in the name of revising electoral rolls."

The agitation reflects a growing national divide. Opposition parties remain wary of discrepancies in existing records. Local social worker Rajen Bhumij noted that the protest highlights the tension between maintaining accurate rolls and protecting democratic access. Another participant summed up the mood: "The Election Commission must ensure that the revision process does not deny genuine voters their democratic rights. We demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar."
