Congress Stages Mock Impeachment of Election Chief Gyanesh Kumar

Shillong: Congress held symbolic public impeachment proceedings on Saturday to demand the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The event took place at the official residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, using a set that mimicked the Lok Sabha floor.

Former Speaker Meira Kumar chaired the event. Kharge formally moved a resolution listing six charges against the election chief. He claimed Kumar conspires to steal elections and acts under the orders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The resolution further accused Kumar of deleting 13.2 million voters, rewriting Form 6 without legislative approval, seizing electoral rolls via ECINET, and silencing fellow commissioners.

Kharge slammed the RSS and the BJP during his address. He argued that the current leadership undermines the democratic foundation of India. He stated, "We want to save the foundation of democracy which is being threatened by the BJP."

The Congress leader called for the total repeal of the 2023 Election Commissioners Act. This law currently grants commissioners life-long legal immunity. Kharge demanded that Kumar face a court of law for treason. Supporters from the INDIA bloc filled the mock chamber, thumping desks and chanting, "Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod."
