CM Sangma Presses Centre for NH-217 Repairs

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma went to New Delhi to demand federal help. He wants immediate repairs on National Highway-217. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who leads the Public Works Department, Sangma met the Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The meeting tackled the decaying state of a road link connecting Meghalaya to Assam.

NH-217 is a lifeline. It feeds the Garo Hills region. The route handles vital goods, essential commodities, and daily commuters. It also provides strategic access toward Dalu near the international border. Residents have struggled with crumbling road conditions for years. This poor infrastructure disrupts travel, stops local trade, and limits access to healthcare. Agricultural markets suffer when trucks cannot get through.

The Garo Students’ Union recently pressured South Garo Hills leaders to force the Chief Minister into action regarding the Baghmara-Karongre stretch. The state government remains tight-lipped. Sangma shared his meeting update on X: "The discussions centred on the highway’s repair works and expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its support in furthering infrastructure development in Meghalaya."

He refused to name specific project zones. There is no timeline for construction. Financial details remain hidden. The state is waiting for the Centre to move.
