Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma revealed a long-term development plan for Shillong on Thursday. He spoke at the Rilbong centenary celebration. The state wants to fix traffic, build public spaces, and boost local business.
Construction projects drive the vision. The state secretariat moves to Umsawli by late 2027. Officials will then widen roads and add green space at the old site. The current Assembly building will become a hub for parking and local entrepreneurs after the legislature moves.
Sangma pushes community-led projects. Localities can get state funds for cleanliness drives and neighborhood improvements. "The government does not work in isolation, but works with the community together and with the people at large," Sangma said. He wants locals to plan for the next century.
The government promotes local trade through new pavilions. The Mawdiangdiang facility sells Meghalaya-made goods like fruit wine, coffee, and ice cream. Officials plan to copy this business model at the Polo riverfront, the public point, and the Unity Mall in Umsawli.
Major projects remain the core focus. Shillong will soon host the country's largest football stadium. Sangma also highlighted long-term goals for education, agriculture, and maternal health. He admits change is hard. Resistance exists. Still, he insists the government is building the systems needed to keep the state moving forward.
