Shillong: Vice President CP Radhakrishnan arrives in Meghalaya on September 7 to launch five major infrastructure projects. These developments represent a total investment of Rs 1,010.95 crore. The foundation stones will be laid during a public reception at the Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong. The Vice President will also observe cultural performances from the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia communities.
The largest initiative is Phase II of the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme. It carries an estimated cost of Rs 850.58 crore. The plan aims to deliver 24/7 drinking water to New Shillong City and 32 nearby villages. It will eventually serve 4.34 lakh people across 86,900 households. Officials say the scheme will introduce Meghalaya's first city-scale smart metering and volumetric water billing system.
Connectivity projects include a 110-metre bridge over the Umngot River costing Rs 21.86 crore. The bridge links East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills while serving 14 villages in Mawkynrew Block. It provides an alternative route between Shillong and Jowai. Furthermore, a 13.5-km all-weather road between Umsen and Barapathar will cost Rs 56 crore. The road connects through Pilangku-A, Jyrmang, Chibra, and Mawiong, benefiting 5,705 people across 21 villages while strengthening links to Assam.
The package features a Rs 72.5-crore power upgrade at Mawkhanu. This includes a 2x50 MVA, 132/33 kV substation and GIS infrastructure. It ensures reliable power for New Shillong. Finally, a 30-bedded AYUSH facility at Shillong Civil Hospital will cost Rs 10 crore. It provides services ranging from Ayurveda to physiotherapy. These works rely on funding from the Urban Challenge Fund, NESIDS, PM-DevINE, and Article 275(1).
Radhakrishnan will visit four northeastern states from September 6 to 9. His office stated: "The Vice President will visit four northeastern states from Sunday, where he will be participating in a series of cultural and academic engagements."
